Capturing the Invisible Architecture of Sound Through Material Dialogue and Emotional Colour Translation
About This Piece
This project transforms the music of Danish jazz-folk trio Hvalfugl into responsive textile installations that capture rhythm and emotion in physical form. Using STOLL industrial knitting machines, delicate surfaces combining steel and silk threads catch light like morning dew on spider webs. Complementing these knitted elements, laser-cut cardboard panels feature strategic perforations and yarn-mending that establish visual rhythm through layered transparency. Each instrument carries its own color identity—fluorescent pink and orange for the electric guitar's captivating energy, deep blue and golden brown for the bass's grounding presence, and silky grey with mint accents for the piano's graceful fluidity. These palettes create visual harmony that mirrors the trio's musical interplay. The resulting pieces function as room dividers that transform with changing light and viewer movement, making each encounter unique. Like New Nordic music itself, which combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation, these textiles bridge aesthetic contemplation and everyday function. The work demonstrates how textile design can translate the intangible emotional qualities of sound into physical forms that invite both practical use and artistic reflection.
